So here goes:-
The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas, pére
“On the 24th of February, 1815, the look–out at Notre–Dame de la Garde signalled the three–master, the Pharaon from Smyrna, Trieste, and Naples. ”
I decided to do Alexander Dumas, Pere, (pere is the English equivalent to senior) today the 24th, July is the 218th anniversary, of his birth. Alexander, Dumas was farther, General Thomas-Alexandre Dumas Davy de la Pailleterie, was born to a French nobleman and a Black Slave.
This first line is from the Count of Monte Cristo, which was completed in 1844 and is one of his most famous of works along with, The man in the Iron Mask and The Three Musketeers novels.
On the day of his wedding Edmond Dantès, first mate of the Pharaon, is falsely accused of treason, arrested, and imprisoned without trial in an island fortress off Marseille. A fellow prisoner, Abbé Faria, correctly deduces that his jealous rival Fernand Mondego, envious crewmate Danglars, and double-dealing magistrate De Villefort turned him in. Faria inspires his escape and guides him to a fortune in treasure. As the powerful and mysterious Count of Monte Cristo, he arrives in the Parisian world of the 1830s, to avenge himself on the men who conspired to destroy him.
