This is the post I do every Friday, which I post a first line of a book, which generally has a connection to a date close to when it is posted. In addition the book is usually one that I have read or is on my TBR.
The reason I decided to do The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, as the book, for my First line Friday post, is because the day after this post goes up, the 15th August 2020 should have been Stieg Larsson’s 66th birthday if he had not passed away in 2004, aged 50.
So here goes:-
The Hunger Games by Stieg Larsson
“It happened every year, almost a ritual”
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, the translation of the Swedish title, was “Men Who Hate Women”. Tells the story of disgraced Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is asked by Henrik Vanger, to find out what happened to his Grandee niece, who went missing 36 years ago.
So with the help of exceptional hacker Lisbeth Salander, with issues of her own, Blomkvist tries to find out what happened to the Grandee niece all those years ago.
About Stieg Larsson
Karl Stige-Erland Larson was boon in Sweden on the 15th August 1964, when his father left is job at the local smelting plant, having to move to the city to find work, however with the house being to small Stieg Larson stayed with his grandparents.
At the age of 9 Stieg went to live with his parents in the city, after leaving school in 1972 he tried to apply to journalism school but was turned down, two years later he did his mandatory military conscription.
In the 1970s while working in photo journalism, he became involved with left wing politics, even spending time in Eritrea training motor units, until illness forced him to come back to Sweden.
After this he started the Swedish Expo Foundation, which was established to “counteract the growth of the extreme right and the white power, culture in schools and among young people.”, also becoming the editor of the Foundation magazine Expo in 1995.
Larson died on the 9th November 2004 of a hart attack, and all though none of the book for the millennium trilogy had been published. The first where set for publication and the, third, just need a little finishing.
It was in 2005 that the girl with the first book was published, first under in Sweden under the Title Män som hatar kvinnor ( English translation Men Who Hate Women), although, the English title is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, with the next to books following shortly afterwards.
In 2015, 10 years later the first book in the millennium series was published, written by David Lagercrantz, with the Swedish title Det som inte dödar oss (English translation “That which doesn’t kill us”, however again they changed the title for the English market, it was The Girl in the Spider’s Web.
There have been 2 other books in the series by the same writer the last one coming out in 2019 called The Girl Who Lived twice.
Lisbeth is a skilled computer hacker, and uses her skills to investigate people. Described in the book, “a pale, androgynous young woman who has hair as short as a fuse, and a pierced nose and eyebrows”, her hair though naturally red is died raven black. In addition to this she has a number of Tattoos including one of a wasp (her hacker name) and a Dragoon on her back.
As a survivor of a traumatic childhood, she is very asocial and introverted, she very hostile to men who attack women and takes pleasure in exposing and attacking them.
At the start of this book she in under the ward of a social worker who is in charge of all her affairs, although by the end of the third book she is declared competent.
This is the journalist who is brought into investigate the missing girl. At the start of the book he is find guilty of Libel and has been fined and sentenced to a term in jail which he severs during the book.
There are two versions film versions of the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which are as follows
This was made by Yellow Bird and the Danish TV company Nordsk Film, relased in 2009 with the second 2 set for TV release, although with the sucess of the first film the other films were released in the cinema.
The Hollywood version of the Girl with the Dragoon Tattoo was released in 2011 staring Daniel Craig, however the only other book in the series that has been filmed was the, first book by David Lagercrantz,The Girl In the Spiders Web,in 2018.
My Relationship with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Like most people I came across this book about the time of all the hype, although I did read it before the Swedish movies came out. I did go to see the second and third Swedish movies at the cinema after watching the first on DVD.
The first book I think, it took me a weekend to read as it had me gripped, quickly followed by the next 2 books in the series, although I have the last 3 books in the series on my TBR, I have not read them yet.
What I liked about the book was that it was the first Scandinavian novel that became mainstream that looked at the dark side the country. In additional still think that Lisbeth Slander, is probably one of the strongest female, (if not male) characters in fiction as she is knocked down but takes control of the situation, with her own moral compass.
