I decided to read Don Quixote after doing a  post in June Called, 10 Best Selling Books of all time and Have I Read Them which you can read here

One of those books was Don Quixote, although I had started to read it when I was younger I did not get very fair into it. Due to its length I decided to listen to an audio book version.

This episodic novel is built on the fantasy life of one Alonso Quixano, who lives with his niece and housekeeper in La Mancha.

Quixano, obsessed by tales of knight errantry, renames himself “Don Quixote” and, with his faithful servant Sancho Panza, goes on a series of quests.

Many of these adventures, including tilting at windmills, are established in European literary consciousness.

When you read a book that is over 400 year old and is said to be one of the most influential books in history, you go into it with a bit of trepidation.

However this book did stand up to it the eponymous character, Don Quixote, could have been written in a way that made him a joke, however he his written care and sympathetically.

With the way he was written about from the early 1600’s, seemed to be someone who you could see walking drown the street any day of the week.

The other main character Sancho Panza, is also a well rounded human, with a back story, so that when he does or says something that is out of the ordinary it is perfectly normal for him.

Don Quixote is an epasodic novel which means it goes from one event to another, this did make the novel feel a bit to long.

However the episodes in the book where all eaxmaning a slightly different aspect of the people in the novel, so it is only a minor issue.

I really did enjoy the way the book ended, as it ended in away that felt in keeping with the book, as it is  done with great care and sympathy.

Audio Review

As I said previously I used the audio book, version Narrated by Roy McMillan, to read this book, and Roy’s voice did enhance the book for me, making it even more enjoyable than it otherwise would have been.

I would recommend this book to any one who is interested in reading the great works of literature, in addition people who are interested in books that examine the human spirit, and the male friendship between Don Quixote and Sancho Panza.

If you as a reader are interested in any of these areas then I would recommend that you read Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra
